VERONICA CAMPBELL BROWN PROVISIONALLY SUSPENDED

-
You should all know by now that Jamaican Sprint Queen Veronica Campbell will not be participating in this weekend's National Trials. A statement on the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association's website  reads...

"She has been provisionally suspended from competition awaiting the outcome of a disciplinary panel that will be empanelled to hear this case.

We also wish to point out that Mrs. Veronica Campbell Brown voluntarily withdrew herself from competition and accepted the provisional suspension"

On May 4th the Double Olympic 200 metres champion tested positive for a diuretic, which can be used to mask the use of performance-enhancing drugs. Sources close to Jamaican athletics told Reuters on Tuesday that the banned drug was contained in a cream which Campbell-Brown was using to treat a leg injury and which she had declared on her doping control form.

They said an important factor was whether or not the banned drug appeared on the label of the cream. The World Anti-Doping Agency has a strict liability policy under which athletes are held responsible for any drug found in their body.

In meantime VCB's manager Claude Bryan is defending his client unequivocally. In a statement he says...

"Veronica is not a cheat, she has via hard work and dedication accomplished a record on the track which is absolutely remarkable" He goes on to say Campbell Brown is indeed shocked by the allegations and will begin the process of clearing her name"

Obviously we like the rest of the track world will be watching this case closely. The reaction from the from the track community and wider public has been mixed. I will reserve judgment until more information is released. In these situations, you really want to be careful about pronouncing a verdict without having all the concrete facts. Though we are glad for the statement from her manager, It would be nice to hear Ms. Campbell Brown speak on this matter herself.

Naturally her absence from this Jamaica's highly contested trials cannot go unnoticed, however track fans like myself are still expecting thrilling races and stiff competition, particularly in the sprints.
