Women's 100m Match-Up: Carmelita Jeter and Veronica Campbell Brown

-
USA's Carmelita Jeter will start as the overwhelming favourite in the women's 100m and for good reasons. Her 10.70 clocking done in Eugene stands as the fastest time this year, with only Veronica Campbell-Brown's 10.76 getting close to it.

The sprint sensation has only lost one race this season, ironically handed to her by Campbell-Brown, who remains her biggest obstacle to the gold in Daegu.

While Jeter's start is not her strong point, her top-end speed is clearly her redeeming quality, though sometimes it's just not enough. To win Jeter will have to start with the field.
VCB is revered for being a mentally tough athlete with speed and determination. Her 100m win at the Osaka Championships in 2007 attests to this. Originally known for her weak start and strong finish, Campbell Brown always ended up among the medals. These days, her start has improved tremendously but is not consistent and her top end speed  isn't always on display. Depending on the day, VCB can either have a brilliant start, staving off fast finishing rivals, or she can have a bad start, charging to the front in the nick of time. To win in Daegu ,Campbell-Brown will have to find that balance between an effective start and a brilliant finish.

Kelly-Ann Baptiste
Medal contenders are Trinidad and Tobago's Kelly-Ann Baptiste and USA's Marshevet Hooker-Myers who've both had an exciting season. After a few steady wins including the rare defeat of Campbell Brown, Baptiste is really enjoying a break-out year.

I think it's fair to say current champion Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce is not in the shape of her life. Though her trademark bullet start is still there, the accomplished sprinter seems unable to maintain it to the line. Despite this I wouldn't quite rule her out. Fraser Pryce has been busy training these last few weeks and if her endurance returns, could take the favourites by surprise. To win she must not only start fast but see it through to the line.

So who will win? Difficult to predict. The caliber of the field is such that if the final were to be run on three different days you could have three different winners. It could be Jeter on one day, VCB on another day or an upset by Baptiste the next. However seeing that you only have one chance at the final, I'll just say definite medal contenders are VCB, Jeter, Baptiste and Hooker-Myers.

Jamaica's olympic silver medalist Kerron Stewart remains a class athlete, however her struggling form makes it difficult for me to place her in medal contention.Without question though, she will make the final.
